25th June 2010
At about 12:20 p.m. found out that the loaded stone train was late getting away from
Penrice leaving there around 12 midday, and was expected through Lyndoch in
about 40 minutes (12:40 p.m.)..... Surprised to see 3 x 830's on this particular train this time as the train came into view
at precisely 12:40 p.m.
The previous days train had had the usual 704 and 843 combination in charge.
The Orion plane shot was being in the right place at the right time, having the camera sitting on the rear seat
of the car and seeing the plane circling to do a 'touch und go' landing at the airfield helped, especially
when I saw the plane come into view in the cars rear view mirrors with the landing lights on and flaps down. |

| The Stonie
taken at Kalimna Road, Penrice, We happened to be at the Kalimna Road crossing
(where the stone train enters and leaves the mine site)
at that same moment as the departing loaded stone train came into view slowly leaving the loading area
this train had the more usual 704 and 843 combination.. The train literally crawled over the
crossing at 2kph travelling downhill at no more than about 10 kph... |

21st March 2010
| Another Sunday spent doing a bit of training,
photographing the returning stone train from Penrice (Angaston) at a couple of locations.
The stone train with locos 844, 843 and 841 was photographed
going through the Nuriootpa's overgrown yard and on its approach to
Lyndoch. |

ANGASTON PENRICE (STONIE) 3 x 830's
|
|
19th April 2009
| Today
I
met the incoming Stonie train at a nice spot on
the Cavan road bridge on Port Wakefield Road
overlooking the Dry Creek North yard. I was very
happy with the results, as well as the ones of
the same train passing through the new Bishops
Loop, the crossing itself is SG only. Was a pity
the 830's didn't SMOKE IT UP though, very clean
exhaust considering. Bishops Loop is in a
good position to capture afternoon trains,
provided you park your car on the northern side
of the crossing, allows time to photograph the
train, get in the car and back onto the Port
Expressway for a quick run into Port Adelaide (look for the 2 x dock
cranes) that is where you
go to see the train climbing up onto the bridge. Still made a nice change
from seeing the usual 704 leading the loaded
Stonie train. A quick training day was enjoyed, even if it was
just for the one train. |

Training breakfast on the run
The train was early and low light was the issue for this
section of its journey and thick cloud...
Still these pics came out quite nicely all things consider.

The S.A.R. Piping Shrike emblem was removed when A.N.R took
over
Now a Magpie
returns in its place on front of 831.
Magpie turns around and spots the S.A.R. badge gone and took

STONIE OVER PORT RIVER BRIDGE
|
August 2008
(Wayne
Morris)
|
After
Stonie having stopped at Dry Creek South for crew change the
same train with 841 added to the front
which is seen here climbing up onto the Port Rail
bridge taken from the adjacent road bridge.
|
|

|

Having reached its destination, the locos enter
the area and shunt the loaded hoppers.
|
Image my surprise when three engines come into view, this time without
841. There were now 843 - 704 and 517 to take the empties back to
Dry Creek South. 517 having been the regular shunting loco and being
replaced with 841 for some reason. I think 517 must have failed at some
stage earlier.
The ICI PENRICE shunt engine is generally well weathered in white powder / deposits...not 517 though.
|
|
|

The three locos - 841 - 704 & 517
|

Side shot of 517
|
|
I waited for the train to depart from ICI - and then
for it to cross the BRIDGE again with the empties.
|
|
|

Onto the bridge with the remains of three lines
of track adjacent to Berth No 14 sheds.
(on the right and out of the picture)
|

Coming off downhill off the bridge.
|
|

The locos on the downhill run off the bridge to near
where the tracks goes into the Y. This train went
straight ahead to go back to Dry Creek.

June 2008

At
near Birkenhead on the western side of the Port
River where the new bridge comes down and joins up
at present with the almost original alignment (has
been altered in recent months) of the old route to
Birkenhead from Glanville - I saw a fella with
camera in hand - turns out he was waiting for the
loaded stone train from Penrice, he found out
(heard on scanner he was carrying) that the train
was coming over the bridge instead of going the
long way around. I made a few phone calls to GWA
and then to ARTC - the train may get away from Dry
Creek at about 3:00p.m.??? Waited and waited, then
went back to the eastern side of the Port River
(Port Adelaide) side waited there, nothing came, A
security person came to me at about 3:15 told me
that the train was still at Dry Creek yard and had
not moved yet... So took off for awhile till
around 4:40 p.m. Went for a return wander to
Birkenhead near the bridge, signals still showing
red. Drove north towards ICI place at Osborne,
caught sight of the empty stonie with 902 (ex 830
class) leading with the GWA - orange 704 in second
place. |
(Wayne
Morris)
|
|
At
about 5:20 p.m. it moved off, managed a few photos in
the next to little or no remaining light.
Then the same train stopped at the double red signal
before the bridge. I parked the car, ran to the loco
position, took a couple of pics of the loco / red
signal with the headlight shining (this is about
250 m prior to the ramp / bridge.). Asked
driver, "OVER, or around the bridge".
"Over the bridge", he replied.
Rushed off with the car, stopped adjacent to fenced
section of track and the UP /DOWN ramp to the bridge.
|
|
|
"Over the
bridge", the driver replied.
|

Then
rushed off with the car,
|
|

Climbed
on the bonnet, then roof of the car and did what I
could do
in the available lighting and hand held from the
top of the car.
|
|
I
was pleased to have managed what
I did in the poor light conditions.
There were plenty
of security people in and around the bridge that
afternoon keeping the photographers and gawkers out. I
could not get into where I really wanted to GET to
show the train on the bridge. I guess once the
trains are regular, then the security people will GO
AWAY. I would guess it is not to keep people out, more
so keep them away from the bridge "LEST THE TRAIN
SHOULD FALL OFF"
