26th August 2009
Another
successful Wednesday outing with start trip to
Port Flat.
We had to revert to Plan F again, the same as for
the last trip as I was heading towards Port Flat
for a rendezvous with my offsider for a days
outing together in the one car.. I send the
official SMS text message: "I am at Grange be
there soon." Response was "Head for the
hills young man, I am going to Yant”-aringa for
MA6"
Being flexible, I was able to make some sense out
of this last minute change of plan and continued
on to the Port Flat regardless.
On
arrival, Port Flat was as empty as empty can be. |
(Wayne
Morris) |
|
A
run out to Pelican Point for a 07:10 arrival and am
rewarded with the Balco train doing a bit of shunting
into McKenzies with DL39 and 1872 (red one). |
|
Once
inside the container yard the gates are closed and
security is on full alert for rail photographers
trying to take photographs through the fence... Today
was not the case |
| A
good clear run along Victoria Road then over
the River Bridge and onto the Port Expressway
and in no time I am at Hanson Road (Bishops
Loop) to see if there are any waiting
trains on the track. I catch a glimpse of an NR97 doing a shunt (push back) into Lysaghts siding, |
Managed
a couple of "busy" photos before the
train goes out of view and crosses Cormack
Road and am not entirely pleased with the
results.
The NR97 has joined forces with AN7 as both
locos on a light engine movement exit the
siding and arrive back onto Bishops Loop. I
assume (quite incorrectly) that these
engines will be heading to the Port Flat -
wrong..
Reaching Hanson Road again I see them heading
off in the opposite direction heading back
towards the Freight Terminal |
|
|
Driving
and stopping near Islington TA railcar station, AN7
and NR97 are sitting near the station platform
awaiting access into the A.F.T. yard, their path is
blocked by other locos including VL358/ALF23 and FQ01
with a crew car. |
|
AN7
is resplendent in its original since new AN green, it
even has the snail logos in situ on the front and
sides.....
|
| Trying
out the camera on what has been the troublesome
auto focusing on a few passing railcars, I hope
for jumbos and am rewarded with yellow ended
3000/3100 types, not the most photogenic type of
prey, but a few pics are captured as they pass
by Islington Workshops. |
|
|
Venturing
to the other side of the tracks (used pedestrian
maze) and ambled down to the southern gates into
Islington Workshops where the gates are open, I
photograph (pixelate) two general view shots of
the remaining sheds inside the complex with a variety
of locos on display, including a railcar inside one of
the sheds and the shell of a NSW 48 class. |
|
Crossing
back over the tracks further light engines are now in
position alongside the station platform including
VL358/ALF23 and FQ01, the driver gives a friendly wave
as he passes by. (This shot keep Johnny happy) |
|
Photos
are obtained of blue NR69 NR121 as they run through
North Adelaide.
This is the last time I get to see these two locos as
they head north and I am caught in abnormally heavy
traffic on Park Terrace.. |
|
Into
Dry Creek South for a quick look and green (favourite)
GM46 is sitting on the ready road and is positioned so
that GM1 will be in the background of this particular
picture. After six goes at this shot in the changing
lighting conditions I am pleased with the results and
head back to the front of EDI facility and see CLP13,
yellow QRN painted loco is sitting outside in the
patchy sunshine. As luck would have it about fifty
seven galahs arrive and land on the grass between
CLP13 and where I am positioned and commence to devour
all and sundry. Deciding this should make a half
reasonable shot if and when these birds take off, I
wait and wait......
A crew arrive for CLP13 which is already idling, the
birds soon scatter as the loco moves forward… |
|
EDI has new security measures in place, courtesy of
couple of Lapwin plovers.

Coming in for line of sight bombing run with hooks on
wings at the ready.
Was very hard to try to get a ffffoooocused picture
when you are under full attack
by these very quick birds at Dry Creek South in
front of EDI.
Even the autofocus wasn't this quick..
|

As
the loco CLP13 passes the EDI sign,
I 'clicked' CLP16
visible in this shot |

Along
the Port Expressway to Port Flat and am rewarded
with LQ3122 doing a little shunting in the yard. |
| Trying
for a new location, I am given permission to park the
car in a businesses yard near the Port Bridge and seek
out a suitable spot for the Balco train from Pelican
Point as it crosses the bridge, of course it will be
approaching me. X wrong again. |
| I
climb onto the roof of my car (not recommended if
it rains) and wait and wait for the train to come.
I am rewarded again with the rail crossing gongs
starting, but there is no train approaching from off
the bridge. I manage to photograph more engines for
the Balco ? this time in the form of 103 (ex NSW45
class loco with a cut down cab) and 1873 heading
onto the bridge. (?). |
Off the car and another drive out to Pelican
Point and I see what appears to be two trains
sitting on adjacent tracks. |
| This
turns out to be DL39 without a train standing
on one track and three locos (PATRICK
colours_red) with 1873 / 103 and 1872
trailing on the other with the consist behind.
Within a few minutes the train is underway and
a good picture is managed here. |
|
The
chase is on as I stick to the speed limit and
get a good run to the River Bridge, crossing
the bridge on the western side I glance along
the tracks, no train, I have beaten the
train…(wrong). As I crest the bridge,
I see the tail of the train disappearing from
view on the eastern side of the bridge…
A good run along Port Expressway, the correct
decision is made to go direct to the top end (eastern)
of Bishops Loop. |
|

|
| As
the rail crossing on South Road is crossed, I
stop off the side of the road immediately
after the crossing, the gongs sound for the
approaching train with the three red locos (Balco)
is fast approaching. A series of pics are
taken at this good location in overcast
conditions. |
|
|

CLF1
/ CLP7 / CLP9 / LDP001
and new on delivery loco AC4306
|
| Another
short run along the Expressway and I am back
at the western end of Bishops Loop waiting for
the expected arrival of a late running MA6.
With the arrival of other rail photographers
at this location, the time has come to try
photographing the train from the wrong side of
the tracks and to get away from them.
Satisfactory
results are obtained once again due to the
subdued lighting conditions as CLF1 / CLP7 /
CLP9 / LDP001 and new on delivery loco AC4306
brings up the rear of the train pass by. I am
now on the wrong side of the tracks, as the
other enthusiasts head off in their respective
cars for I would guess Port Flat, I wait for
the passing of this train. This is a good
reason for me not to go to Port Flat. |
|
I
make my way to Two Wells to see 2 x SCT locos in the
crossing loop, one of the crew advises that they have
a long wait until about 2:15p.m and are expecting
another 3 trains to pass before ‘Their Time
Comes”. The rest of the day is a fairly uneventful
affair as I set off in search of somewhere to
photograph these expected trains beyond Two Wells.
|
| As
I cross the tracks at the Gallipoli Crossing,
I see another rail enthusiast has beaten me to
the location and has set up his video camera
for these trains……… I find a location
closer to the tracks and am hidden from his
view by a large peppertree. |
|

|
| Remaining
here I photograph NR109 on 4AD8 pass train to
Darwin as it zips past at about 1:10 p.m. |
|
|
This
is followed at 1:52 p.m. by: |
|

|
|
NR58
NR6 on 3MP7.
 |
|
| I
set off back towards Two Wells for a different
location for the next train and settle for a
road crossing about three kilometres from Two
Wells, close to the 50K post. |
|

|
| The
next train through is MP5 with NR93 NR92
passing by at 2:35 p.m. |
|

|
|
A
passing shot of some of the loading. |
|
| Back
to Gallipoli Crossing for what is expected to be
the last train for the day for me….this is the
one worth waiting for with CLP9, CLF7, LQ3122
and the new loco for ARG AC4306 expected
sometime. (before it gets dark I hope). A
reasonable number of other rail enthusiasts now
turn up here to photograph this train on the
long sweeping bend on an embankment at this
location. |
|

|
| The
train sweeps past our location at 4:25 p.m.,
within 90 seconds it has gone into the distance.
The enthusiasts disperse quietly going their
respective ways, one had travelled from Port
Augusta, and another was over from Victoria, the
remainder were Adelaide locals. |
|
I
see my expected travelling companion for the
second time during the day, not bad
considering we were going to do the Training
Together on this occasion….
His comments in a later e-mail to me read
(quote) : ….and the programs or plans are
always flexible my good man “flexibility is
the key to good rail fanning”.
Who could argue with these words of wisdom…
from the Wise Man himself.
So as the day draws to a close, it is time to
head home, a small detour for one last look at
Port Flat. |
|
|

|
| Yes,
rewarded with CLP13, G516 in QRN yellow and
LDP001 trailing with train number AM6, in the
failing light managing the last pictures of
the day as the train departs at 5:32 p.m. |
|
So
endeth another TRAINING DAY.

These next few
unusual pics below okay are not of trains, but
were noted while railfanning and is
something out of the box about the "Santa
Fe" desalination rig that was parked
in the Port River near the rail port River
bridge.
The
barge was on the news apparently and is here in
conjunction with the desalination plant at
Hallett Cove; apparently in the Port of Adelaide
for next couple of months for maintenance and
then plying back and forth from the Port down to
Stanvac. This is where the shot of ‘the stonie’
was taken and is where it (barge) will be tied
up for next couple of months.

12th November 2009, was on its way down to Stanvac for work in conjunction with building the desalination plant there. Apparently will spend some time there before returning to Port Adelaide at some later date.

A
couple of pix from Port Phlat this arvo, just noseying around and saw the orange nose of a GM
hidden in amongst the trees at ABB silos Port Adelaide.
Didn't have long to wait before the two locos
light engine GM47 and CLP17 (the last locos) in their respective
classes. (although for the sake of correctness when the CL's were rebuilt into CLF/CLP classes, the
original numbers did not necessarily follow the rebuilding, this is probably the case with the present CLP17
was originally CL8. GM47 and CLP17 were last locos of their classes.

A somewhat different type of coverage in lieu of the normal train underway shots, this is the
preparation of the Mindarie Sands train for Thursday 29th October 2009.
Was poorly positioned for the actual departure, had left the safety of my high up perch went to ground
level and confronted by waist high lineside 'grass' as the Mindarie train moved off with GM42 & GM43.......
Had intended to follow this train until the daylight failed, however due to the change of locos up front

tonights Pinnaroo grain train to now GM42 and GM43, you could say my interest had
