Loco's 2207, 2210, GM42, GM43, CLP14 on 7062
sleeper train
12th December 2009
I
settled upon another location this time (Back
Callington Road crossing), one which I haven't
used since the early 90's, this one being between
what was once CALLINGTON Station and the usual
spot at the 68K post. This site will feature later
as one of those sites where a passing loop
/(siding) is going to be re-instated in this
general area and down the grade towards CALLINGTON.
Not my usual favourite GM/CLP leading combination
this particular time, nevertheless they are still
in there at loco positions 3,4 and 5.

28th January 2010.
It certainly was an action packed day with many trains sighted photographed and or followed.
Was quite a warm day with electrical storms and rain up around Crystal Brook / Port Pirie way and beyond which made an interesting subject of its own - in photos as the day progressed. Did 840 kilometres for the day and had a mighty fine day out there....

The one of most interest and perhaps sadness for me on a personal level was the failure of NR101 whilst working a Perth bound freight started to run into trouble at Port Germein when passing, NR101 the second loco was 'passing' a small amount of black smoke and sounded on the 'Knocking' side as it passed by....... when the train was nearing Nectar Brook you could see the train had slowed considerably the smoke (black) was by now pouring from NR101's exhaust.....the train eventually was stopped some kilometres from Winnanowie where the failed loco was shut down... A little later it reached Winnanowie
with NR116 doing all the hard work to get there.
The resulting pictures of the train not long after its initial problems are highlighted in this selection of shots the first one showing it entering the Nectar Brook dips, the further shots are of the train as it was crawling up the incline before the 'remains' of Nectar Brook near to where it stopped to shut NR101 down a few minutes later.
The large volumes of black smoke reminiscent of steam days and of oil burning steam locos - except this
was modern traction in the form of Pacific National's NR101.

Karoonda Graining Training
4th March 2010.
The original planning phase had suggested another trip out north for the usual ‘Movements’ expected on a Thursday.
However as flexibility is the key to good planning a last minute change saw the focus shifted onto the returning loaded Karoonda grain train.
A leisurely start was made with gentlemen’s hours being adhered to.

Short Training Run
18th March 2010
Had heard there would be two grain trains going south, one in the morning (5R81 to Tailem Bend) and the other in the afternoon (5L51 to
Pinaroo).
With big intentions I set off to photograph the first of the grain trains, ambling along to a relatively new spot nearer to Sleeps Hill Tunnel.
Photographing the train as it passes by at 10:57 am to be precise, with locos CLP8 CLP17 CLP14 CLF6.
Due to the hot weather any further ideas for training were shelved as I retreated back home.
The afternoons grain train Train No 5L51 - locos 703 GM47 705 2207 2212 was photographed near Lynton RWS and followed to Belair RWS where it crossed the returning mornings Tailem Bend grain train now
Train No 5R82 - CLF6 CLP14 CLP17 CLP8.
A railcar is waiting access into the stabling area at Belair as the two trains cross.

Northern Training Trip
21st March 2010
I
left my car in Mallala and joined forces with the wise one himself in the pursuit of coverage of Train No 6DA2.
The initial plan sees us heading north for Nantawarra, with no train in sight we continue
on passing through Snowtown, Redhill, Crystal Brook, and end up just out of Port Pirie to wait for the arrival of the train.
Within 10-15 minutes the train has passed and we are off again following it southbound, further pictures are taken
at Rocky River, then as it heads of across country towards Redhill.
The last pictures are taken from the car as we parallel the train nearing
Snowtown.

Picking up train number 6PS7 at
Bungama, (east of Port Pirie) this was followed and photographed along the way at Crystal Brook, Gladstone, Yongala and Peterborough.
At Snowtown silos (grain handling facility, in short) loco GM47 was seen loading its train the other two locos numbers were not obtained.
Into Peterborough we discover the two trains we had been looking forward to photographing would be on the menu today. The ore train from Broken Hill had been cancelled and the ballast train with one of the green GM's was positioned closer to Broken Hill than we were prepared to travel..
NR26 and NR16 on the Indian Pacific are photographed sidelined at Peterborough
waiting for 6PS7, the train we had been following to cross it there. |

| Decisions of the highest order are made as we press on north regardless, stopping at the ruins of Ucolta, memories of steam on the narrow gauge are experienced as the water storage tank is photographed. A car approaches on a dirt track elderly occupant
(straight out of the film Wolf Creek) gives me a half beware/warning. "Don't hang around here too long the old lady up there doesn't like people down here, she might come down here with her shotgun."
The old fellow is only bluffing isn't he?, however as this fits in with our schedule we leave in a cloud of dust. |
Near
Yunta.
 |
Near
Dowd's Hill.
 |
| Nearing Yunta I see the headlight of a train waiting in the siding, with not much time to spare I do a quick U turn and head to a pre selected location about 8 kilometres
'outta town' - NR14 and NR72 is pictured there on T/N
6SP5. This train is followed and last photographed as it runs along an embankment about 2 kilometre from the
infamous Tin Tunnel of Peterborough near Dowds Hill. |
|
The tunnel project appears to have been abandoned or placed in the too hard basket, the
compounds and workers appear to have long gone elsewhere to seek work on some other easier project, the temporary detour road is becoming more permanent these days, the advance roadwork signs shows a commencement date of 2007....ending in
"To be announced one day".

airstrip. (Well done Jamestown)...! |
|
| Another stop is made at Caltowie as my observer sees a green stick in the yard, I stop the car, within one minute
train No 1YN2 is into the yard and hurries through with NR9 and NR101 up front on the steel train. |
|
The weather closes in, the skies open up as we make for home, believing the Caltowie pics would be the last ones for the day, within five kilometres of Snowtown the rain eases then stops, blue sky shows itself over in the western sky... The Train God has at last been kind to {me} as my co-pilot, the one casting wisdom as a stepping stone still struggles with his failed imaging device!!!
