| ‘Central Workings’ includes photographs of rail movements in and around the Adelaide Metropolitan area on both the broad gauge and the standard gauge and includes light engine movements, freight transfers to and from the former Gillman freight yards, the former Mile End freight yards, Dry Creek north and south freight yards and the Islington Freight Terminal,
(now the Adelaide Freight Terminal operated by Pacific
National). Transfer movements from the Gillman (now vacant
land) and Mile End freight yards (now a passing loop adjacent the Adelaide Rail Passenger Terminal, the SANTOS Stadium and netball
courts) were once common and taken for granted, today however, they are merely a memory. The former Bakewell Bridge,
(now an underpass) served many a rail enthusiast a worthwhile vantage point to observe the comings and goings from Mile End freight yards/diesel depot, and with such movements the 500, 800 and 830 class were the norm, however, a variety of motive power is featured. |
