| Photographs taken under the heading of ‘Northern Workings’ includes trains that worked out of or north of Adelaide, mainly on the standard gauge to Port Augusta, Whyalla, Broken Hill, Sydney or Perth
(standard gauge having reached Adelaide circa
1980); some broad gauge workings of the Penrice stone train and occasional grain train workings may also be included. Coverage includes regular passenger workings of the Indian Pacific and the legendary Ghan when hauled by GM’s, 600’s, 930’s and various motive power combinations. Freight workings include such trains as the Westliner
(in the days ‘piggy backers’ – before double stacks which are now a regular occurrence on Train No
MP5), the Superfreighters, the Pirie oil train, stock trains and other miscellanea workings, of which the motive power included AL’s, CL’s, GM’s, ‘new’ DL’s along with the Alco brigade of 600, 700, 830 and 930 class locomotives. |

The working of triple 830’s (868, 870, 840) on the Indian Pacific was indeed a rare occurrence,
however a late afternoon lashup of GM20, GM26, 847, 958, 607 was also unusual, however, late afternoon at Islington,
and the photographer waited the opportunity and recorded the moment for
posterity. |
