| Photographs taken under the heading of ‘Southern Workings’ includes trains that worked out of or south of Adelaide on the broad gauge to Tailem Bend, Mount Gambier, Melbourne and related branch lines
(standard gauge did not go beyond Adelaide to Melbourne until circa
1995). Coverage includes regular passenger workings of the Overland hauled by various motive power combinations including Victorian N, S and X class locomotives and Blue Birds on the Mount Gambier passenger service. Freight workings included such trains as the Express Goods, the Superfreighter, the TNT train, Mount Gambier and other southern branch line freight traffic. Motive power included the Alco brigade of 700, 830 and 930 class locomotives, together with BL’s and the through working of Victorian C, S and X class locomotives. Sadly the 900 class locomotives were retired or scrapped circa 1984. |

| On
Thursday the 20th of October, 1988 Train No 5615
departed Adelaide as C503, BL32, 965, hauling 900
‘Lady Norrie’. A normal freight working and not
unusual in itself, however English Electric 900 ‘Lady
Norrie’ was being hauled to Melbourne for display
at the 1988 Bi-centennial rail festival being held
there. This train is seen from atop the Bakewell
Bridge at Mile End, then at Clapham, Belair,
Ambleside and Callington. At Callington Train No
5615 awaits a cross with Train No 5602, Bluebirds
260 258 on their way to Adelaide on the regular
passenger service from Mount Gambier to Adelaide. We
then see the train crossing the Murray River at
Murray Bridge and then at Tailem Bend where banker
locomotive 965 has been detached and the train is
ready to depart for Melbourne. Locomotive 900 is
seen at Hawthorn on Train No 3508 hauled by BL32 944
on its return journey into Adelaide on the 25th of
October 1988. |

| Some interesting observations within this series of photographs is that the Bakewell Bridge is no longer; to the right of this train at Belair there is no Trans Adelaide railcar depot; Callington had a loop once – it was replaced with a short ballast siding in Callington and is now in the process of being re-instated as a passing loop by ARTC; the passenger service to Mount Gambier has passed into history, along with all those signal gantries that once adorned the Tailem Bend yards. Some things come, some things go, some things we take for granted and they pass into history, and others may appear differently – funny thing this

“Train No 745 worked from Adelaide to Mount Gambier on a regular basis and usually originated at Gillman to travel along the suburban Port Adelaide line to North Adelaide. Sunday afternoons was always a good one to check out and examine the “lashups” that would sometimes feature on this train, the extra units being used to balance locomotives which were detached at Tailem Bend and then used as “bankers” back into Adelaide. A majority of the times, this train would be worked by Alco power in the form of 700’s, 830’s and 930’s; the 900 class, by this time, had moved off into history. On occasions, GM power, converted to broad gauge, was also used.
967 (930) (first picture below) worked this train on the 7th of May 1989 and is seen on the broad gauge main at Keswick; 930 is now a static museum piece at the Port Dock Railway Museum. Lynton was always a popular spot in the afternoons for this train and is seen on the 15th May and 12th June, 1989. This train, on occasions, was also seen at Ambleside, once a station with a loop and goods siding near Balhannah; this location is about to enter into history with proposals by ARTC to build a new 1800 metre passing loop between this location and
Yantaringa. |

| On the 29th of October 1989 this train featured 7 locomotives and is seen at
Ambleside, Callington (Kanmantoo) and the old Callington station yard when the original loop was in existence. The 17th of November 1989 appears a normal working passing under the Bakewell Bridge, Mile End - the bridge is no longer; as was the process of working the broad gauge main from North Adelaide to Mile End and then proceed along the south line mixing it with Trans Adelaide railcar workings. Sunday’s lashup on the 26th November 1989 being exceptional – 9 locomotives and all Alco’s. |

Those were the days when Alco’s ruled and freight trains worked to Mount Gambier when it was still linked to the broad gauge (5’3”) network. Standard gauge to Melbourne became operational in 1995, thus cutting the link to Mount Gambier at
Wolseley; that section of line not being standardised and the broad gauge line / link to Mount Gambier effectively ‘closed’ on the 12th of April 1995.” |
