706
was just leaving Tailem Bend at 07:35 a.m. 26th February 1992 bound for
Karoonda.....
First 700 diesel to go that way from what I remember. I was off to see friends in Barmera on
that day, left the train in Karoonda.
Went to Barmera and returned the next day 27th February 1992 - through Karoonda and lo and behold there was 831 and 843 arriving in Karoonda yard with T/No 5507 with 45 for 938 tons = 618 metres long train, with empty wagons for storage on what remained of the Waikerie line/ then terminated at
GALGA, so it was called GALGA Main line then - the drivers
W. VANDEREL and J (Nobby) CLARKE - I went for the short shunt onto GALGA main line to near the 173 k post where the empty wagons were placed in storage there. |

A
blast from the past (1991) Second to last train to Peebinga.
Train left Tailem Bend at 0800 am with locos 831 and 832 with one
hopper AHDL-1. Train number 5571. Karoonda onto Peebinga line
at 0925 hours. The one hopper was dropped off at GURRAI.
Was unable to get into GURRAI due to road closures of the dirt
/mud roads. Made a big detour around. PEEBINGA at (275k post).
A full load when returning from PEEBINGA, including the ROAD RAILER - Fred Sullivan followed the train.
|
| PEEBINGA,
the yard was so clean and well maintained, as you can see
good clean ballast in the yard from recent work too. All for
nothing obviously....... The one and only time I went
to Peebinga - I would be quite surprised if many people had
ventured out to PEEBINGA to do some training.?? I was lucky
in many ways, working shift work in those times, I would
have a four day break and be able to wander off and do my
own things training wise........ As Cliff Olds said,
"I wouldn't have missed it for quids" |

I
remember this morning, twas so cold being winter and frosty.
The sun took for ever to come up on this day (same as
every other day) when you are in a hurry for it to
rise. By 1999 the grain trains no longer loaded in
LOXTON itself, so the train would run into Loxton, the locos
run around and go back in the opposite direction for about
5-6 kilometres from memory to the new grain handling
facility at TOOKAYERTA..... The picture is not the
best quality image, poor exposure and grainy...
neverthertheless... |
